5 Timeless Wooden Furniture Pieces Every Home Needs

Trends cycle every few years; good timber doesn't. If you're furnishing slowly and buying once, these are the five pieces our craftsmen would build first — in order.

1. The dining table that fits your life

Measure your room, subtract a metre for chairs and traffic, and build to that — not to a catalogue size. Oak or ash, oiled finish, legs that let a wheelchair or a high chair slide in.

2. Chairs worth re-gluing

A solid-wood chair with wedged tenons can be tightened forever. Avoid dowels hidden in particle board — when they fail, the chair is firewood.

3. A bed that never squeaks

Bolted hardwood rails with a centre spine. Build it once and it will outlast three mattresses and two house moves.

4. Storage that hides the ugly

A sideboard with soft-close solid drawers swallows chargers, paperwork and board games while looking like sculpture.

5. One small thing, made beautifully

A stool, a bench, a bedside table. Small pieces teach you what you love in wood — grain, weight, feel — before you commission the big ones.
