Small rooms don't need less furniture — they need harder-working furniture. The best small-space joinery does two jobs at once and disappears when you don't need it.

Think vertical, then hidden

Floor-to-ceiling bookcases with a rolling ladder turn a dead wall into a library. Window seats with lift-up lids swallow winter bedding. A fold-down desk in oak closes into what guests mistake for wall panelling.

One surface, three meals

Our most-requested small-space piece is a 60cm console that unfolds to seat eight. Butterfly leaves, self-storing extensions — the mechanics matter as much as the timber, so we use solid brass and steel hardware rated for decades.

Light colours, honest grain

Ash, maple and pale oak bounce daylight around tight rooms. Keep finishes matte and pale, and let one darker piece — a walnut stool, say — anchor the space so it doesn't feel like a sauna.
